Foundations and Modern Technique and
Expression. $40
With our
attention to drills and technique in Arabic dance, we
will explore further modulations and their characteristic
connections to
musical passages as they apply to modern
Raks Sharki. Some peppy, some poppy, chewy & gooey -
and combining with previous workshop information on music
theory to apply to your own dance
presentations.
1:30 PM to 3:30 PM Technique and
Stylings $40 Jim
has spent April, May & June continuing studies. and will be
returning from Egypt just before our workshops. Creating his
signature breakdowns from the information, we will explore technique
and stylings from information gathered first hand in Cairo in
private lessons and in workshops around the world. Not only
will we look at stylings of specific Egyptian dancers (Fifi Abdo,
Nagua Fouad, Randa Kamal, etc) but we will offer insights in how to
create your own personal style for the current and past trends in
improvisational formats. Assuming a strong basis in foundations, we
will take more of
an intermediate level approach to
describing arabic stylings.

From the roots of Tribal (ATS) thru
modern hip hop stylings, technique has played a monumental
role in precision and isolation. We will approach Tribal
Fusion combinations and expressions in two formats: 1 - A
series of combinations to a current industrial/goth remix piece
and 2 - Applying Tribal Fusion techniques as applications for
Arabic style dancers (especially drum solos!).
Techniques expressed will not only highlight the overlap of
'belly dance' between Egyptian Raks Sharki and American Tribal
Fusion, but present a palette for all dancers to draw from to
assist in creating their own personal
style. Crisp,
accurate technique is required for this
workshop!

control, internal power,and technique

& after Gentle, airy passages...gooey
melodic lines on accordian...soulful tears of the violin -- and
why do we feel compelled to hit the 4 beat on the floor?
Ending a weekend of intensity, we will bring our
power inside...and find our souls in the space between the
beats...to dance beyond each phrase. Technique is a
wonderful concept, but so often missed in the intensity of a
drawn bow, or a liquid call from the ney. We will learn to
make the moments that take the audiences breath
away!
